4 Star Fred Smith Verbals to MSU

Detroit Southeastern senior wide receiver Fred Smith made a verbal commitment to attend Michigan State on Sunday.

Smith, who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 200 pounds, chose the Spartans over Michigan. Smith said he runs the 40 in 4.4 and is a four-star prospect according to recruiting Web site Rivals.com (five stars is the highest ranking). Smith cited two major factors is his decision: He will be allowed to play basketball at MSU and a teammate, defensive back Charles Burrell, also has committed to playing football at MSU.

Smith is the fourth commitment for the class of 2008.The commitment is non-binding and athletes can make it official on National Signing Day in February.

MSU Hockey Visits White House

The national-champion Michigan State ice hockey team traveled to Washington on Monday for NCAA Championship Day at the White House. The Spartans - along with NCAA champs from several other sports - were greeted by Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts, as well as President George W. Bush. Big 12 commish to take job with Big Ten Network

We’re not sure what it says about your conference when your commissioner resigns to go work for the television network of another conference. Big 12 fans must be asking themselves that this week. Big 12 commissioner Keviin Weiberg has announced that he’ll be resigning in July to take a position with the Big Ten Network. ESPN.com reports that Weiberg recently helped negotiate a Big 12 TV deal with ESPN and ABC and the conference had great success under his leadership.

It isn’t known what position he’ll take at the new network.

Women BBall in Preseason WNIT

The Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) committee has announced that Michigan State will host IUPUI in the first round of the Preseason WNIT on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Breslin Center. The 16-team tournament features a new format this fall, as it moves from a single elimination to a three-game guarantee. Second-round games of the WNIT will be played on Nov. 11-13, semifinals will be on Nov. 14-15, and the championship is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 18.

MSU Football Season Tickets

Football season tickets will go on sale to the general public today. Season tickets are priced at $287 for the general public ($41 per game) and $231 for faculty/staff ($33 per game). Family Plan season tickets (minimum four seats) are listed at $210 each ($30 per person). To order football season tickets online, click here. MSU students can purchase season-tickets online by clicking here.

First-year Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio and his team will tackle a demanding seven-game home schedule in 2007, including non-conference games against UAB (Sept. 1), Bowling Green (Sept. 8) and Pittsburgh (Sept. 15), plus Big Ten contests against Northwestern (Oct. 6), Indiana (Oct. 13/Homecoming), Michigan (Nov. 3) and Penn State (Nov. 17). Single-game tickets (if available) go on sale Wednesday, Aug. 1.
